The golden summertime hills of California captured my eye years ago, and after finally moving back to California, they are one of my favorite landscape painting subjects. This painting began as a sketch in the natural landscape in San Diego’s East County, near Escondido.

Tecolote Canyon Landscape
Along the hiking trail in Tecolote Canyon, San Diego, California. I really respond to the golden grass contrasted with the green California live oaks. When I lived in Virginia, that was the look of a winter landscape- but here that is the look of summer.
California Landscape Painting is for sale.

Lime Still Life
House in Mission Hills
Urban landscape oil painting of a house in Mission Hills, San Diego, California. I thought the brown gray of this house was very striking. I love to walk through Mission Hills- what a great area.
Still Life With Guava and Lemon
The makings of a top shelf guavarita.
Original still life painting of a guava and a lemon. It smelled great while I was painting it, which took a couple of days. Inspired by Euan Uglow, I left the measuring marks visible in the finished piece.
La Jolla Beach Cliffs
Original seascape of the cliffs in La Jolla, overlooking Black’s Beach in San Diego, California. The steep steps down the sandy cliffs to the ocean will tell you if you’re in good cardiovascular shape!

Earth Day Was Yesterday
Earth Day was yesterday, but I forgot to post a natural landscape that celebrates the environment. So I’m doing it today instead. Update: Earth Day is today! My bad.
Landscape painting of Mission Trails Park in San Diego, California. A natural area with stunning mountain views, grassy meadows and native oaks, and the river flowing through it. I love to paint here.
I began this piece en plein air, but I had forgotten my toned grounds (left them on the table at home) so I was working on spare canvases that I keep in the back of my truck. Working alla prima from white means I’ll need an additional session in the studio to finish the painting, and that’s what I did with this landscape.
Vacant Lot in Hillcrest, San Diego
California Wildflowers
Original oil painting of yellow California wildflowers. I’m not sure what kind they are… are they poppies?

Oh noez! Historic building demolition in San Diego
You may remember I painted the iconic San Diego Farmer’s Market in February. Are you bummed to hear part of it was torn down today? I know I am!

Image by Adrian Florido courtesy of KPBS
According to this report Wal-Mart rented the structure, promising to retain its historical street appearance while renovating the interior to house a Wal-Mart store.
I am all for repurposing old buildings in the urban core, I think it’s a great idea and I can cope with the fact that some parts need to be rebuilt. Hopefully minimal demolition to accommodate construction is all that’s happening here. Because I can’t stand it when a great old structure gets pulled down for a parking lot or for no reason at all.
Vacant Lot in North Park
Painting of an overgrown vacant lot in North Park, San Diego, California next door to a well-kept Craftsman home.

Pink Bow Cat
A white Persian cat in a pink bow. Part of my series of cat paintings. I started this series over a year ago and paint one cat portrait per week.
The cat paintings help me to remember to have fun with art, and often they, like this one, reflect my mood.
