She had just moved to her new place 3 days before.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kevinmaddoginman\/3801373222\/\" title=\"Julia- New Orleans by Kevin Mad Dog Inman, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2511\/3801373222_57f540abab.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" alt=\"Julia- New Orleans\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Julia&#8217;s neighborhood&#8230; well, we just waved to the drug dealers and they waved back.  <\/p>\n<p>In the words of Charles, who sat out front in a wheelchair with other black men drinking day and night:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This neighborhood is mostly safe&#8230; as long as you don&#8217;t go outside by yourself.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And in the words of another unnamed neighbor:  <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Welcome to the jungle, baby!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We just unloaded the Jeep<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kevinmaddoginman\/3801372814\/\" title=\"Slum by Kevin Mad Dog Inman, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3462\/3801372814_c51b43b1e4.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" alt=\"Slum\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and sat out in the steamy night drinking like everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>For the next day, I had planned a trip to the Garden District to see more historic homes, antique shopping, a Plantation Tour (poorly), and dinner in one of the fancy French Quarter restaurants.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another baking day.
