A night landscape of lights spilling up the hillside opposite. Looking from Hillcrest over University Heights in uptown San Diego. I wore a headlamp and began the painting en plein air, then finished in the studio. Italian cypresses, old houses, and far-off palms.
Miss Marmalade sleeps again. I did the painting from a pastel sketch since I work a lot faster in pastel.
Night falls in the park. It’s a great place to walk in the twilight, with the sharp, medicine smells of eucalyptus and the cool, damp wind off the Bay.
Along the hiking trail in Tecolote Canyon, San Diego, California. The University of San Diego is right up on the hill above, on the opposite side of the trail.
I’ve had Japanese art on my mind and this painting is one from that series. They are based on the Muromachi ink paintings from the 1300s, although they are painted from life in oil.
