The water bus stop by the house was closed, which was mostly annoying except when I painted this.
The Piazzetta, just after dawn.
They used to execute people between the pillars in the days of the Republic. If you were gay, this is where you’d be burned alive, or- if you were lucky- after they cut off your head.
How’s that for a sales pitch? Probably not so good, but the history is why I wanted to paint here.
I painted this one a few months ago in Del Mar. It’s two panels taped together on the back.
I’m working on a series of pictures of this spot. It’s a hike from anywhere you can park. They’ve recently installed a 3 way stop here, which has had the weird effect of making the spot seem much busier than when it was just a stretch of 50 MPH road. It alternately smells like exhaust and like growing things.
When I painted this one, the wildflowers were in full bloom. I went back today to do another piece as the landscape dries out and becomes the brown, gold, and tan of California summer. Both those plein air paintings are preparatory studies for larger pieces.
We went to the Santa Ynez wine country for the weekend. My hope was to paint some scenic landscapes but I guess my heart wasn’t really in it and I wound up painting this. This was the town of Santa Maria, mostly just a string of strip malls with housing behind it, like so many small towns all over the United States.
The AirBNB in Venice. It was pretty nice.

Painted on the cliffs.
In Rome this week trying to get some paintings done… In the rain! Now to return to drying my shoes with a hair dryer.
Behind my aunt’s house in Boise.
I thought the mountains were so pretty.
Things I’ve learned in Idaho: it’s pronounced Boissse, as though everyone is the Heir to Slytherin. Also there is a bird here that sounds like R2D2.
