Cadbury Mini Eggs Easter Candy Still Life Painting 1

I just realized I forgot to post this one. It was the first Easter Candy painting I did this year. The Cadbury Mini Eggs are my favorite- and with one week to go to Easter I’m on my third bag. 😉

Easter Candy Still Life Painting is for sale on my Etsy shop.

Clementine Orange – Fruit Still Life Painting

Clementine Orange – Fruit Still Life Painting

I seem to have got back into still life again recently, mostly painting very small works of a single object. I think it started during the rains- was it two weeks ago? And it really hasn’t let up. I love mandarin oranges- one of my favorite fruits to eat as well as make art out of.

Cats in Art

Leaving the pet sitting house today. I think my cat is going to miss the birds in the canyon.

Here’s a closeup of the older painting of mine- probably from 2008 or so.

Still Life With Junk On The Table

This piece is 24 x 24 inches. I used to work much larger than I currently do. I mean, I do still do the occasional large painting for a commission- big paintings can really breathe life into a room- but I’ve been into small-scale works in a big way for at least a year now. Sometimes I still feel the urge to paint six foot canvases though! Maybe of San Diego Brutalist architecture, which has caught my eye lately.

I remember with this painting I felt very bold and rebellious for using black out of the tube. It was Utterly Forbidden when I was in art school.

OK, going to pack things up and head out. I am itching to get to my easel.

Urban Landscape Painting, San Diego, California

Urban Landscape, San Diego – Oil Painting

This house and the garage- in the foreground- are Mission Revival in style, but due to the vantage point from the alley, they look like modernist white boxes. It is a strange but wonderful place. The front and sides are all different colors- pink and light green and taupe and beige for the different sides of the house and detached garage. But all close to pale so you don’t see it at first. After the recent rains, the yard is a green and gold carpet of California wildflowers.

Have Cat, Will Travel

Marmalade at Large

We’re pet sitting this weekend for my aunt. She has two dogs that were adopted from Mexico a few years ago and has gone on a wine tour of Santa Barbara with my uncle. They live on a canyon and I’m looking forward to doing some drawings from the deck. I’ve done paintings here before, but I got too exhausted from bringing 75 pounds of laundry to also carry my painting supplies.

I have moved around all of the artwork in the house- I think this is my right as a pet sitter/ painter. I’d left some large paintings in their garage before.

I also brought Miss Marmalade. She enjoys exploring this new space. She activates the space, like a Minimalist sculpture that is alive and made out of cats.

The two small paintings are from my MFA days, and the one on the left was painted by my grandmother, who is a talented artist and quilter. We have several of her wonderful quilts which are perfect for our San Diego weather.

California Art License Plate

Usually I am interested in art plates that have kittens or Elvis painted on them, and which can be hung on the wall in my breakfast room. I also love the Art License plate design featuring the work of Wayne Thiebaud (Tee-bow).

Paella Party

Paella

Last night we made paella. I enjoy paella which is fortunate since I ate it every day of my junior year of college, which I spent in Spain studying at the University of Valencia. This is also where I got into plein-air painting, in that beautiful ancient Mediterranean city with the palm trees, Baroque architecture, and amazing light.

You begin by sautéing onions, peppers, and sweet chorizo in olive oil:

Delicious!

Cat Painting Tuesday: Laser Cat

Custom Painting of Laser Cat

Laser Cat is full of epic strength.

I paint a cat every week. I started this project over a year ago, and I am documenting it on my other website, Cat Painting Tuesday. You can also find Cat Painting Tuesday on Etsy.

I paint cats for various reasons. I like cats, and these paintings are fun. I like to have fun.

I also use these cat paintings to free up my brushes and to experiment with new techniques. Alas, sometimes these experiments fail. That happened this week with a costume cat and a palette I don’t usually employ. So I am rerunning this painting from last summer, and hopefully next week’s Cat Painting Tuesday will be more successful!
