Coronado Plein Air Painting

A hot morning. I went down to the beach to cool off.

The Santa Ana winds carried a mini sandstorm with each 50 MPH gust. These weren’t ideal painting conditions, and I decided to leave halfway through this piece and finish it in the peaceful, cat-filled, air-conditioned studio.

Some people have a big fancy philosophy of plein air painting. Well, I am not one of them. There is no shame in working from photo references, I just like to be outside and that’s why I like to paint on location.

A plein air watercolor on Coronado. Though it is March, we’re having August weather. There were kids running around on the beach, dads grilling, people riding bikes on the waterfront with chihuahuas in the baskets, people taking soil samples (?). for sale
