A cool marine layer overhead down on the docks. Not the most restful place to paint, since a Coast Guard helicopter landed about 50 feet away and blew over the easel. for sale

Although now that I look at this, maybe it was actually Del Mar. Who knows? Both by the water, both have trees and dirt.

Low cliffs in Cabrillo, on Point Loma. for sale
Painted on location last week.

Last year, we had the best of intentions of walking down to the waterfront (about a mile) to watch the fireworks. We had some people over, grilled out. Drank some sparkling water.
Then we got lazy. Climbing up on the roof (from which we have a glorious panorama view of the city) seemed treacherous. So we went out in the street and hopped up and down to see what we could see. This was what we could see.
Happy Independence Day!

Painted on location today in Ocean Beach. The marine layer ended just behind me, with blue skies behind and cool haze ahead. for sale

Went to Cabrillo today to paint with my friend Margaret.
This composition is weird. I did not know if this would work, and I’m not 100% sure it does work. But it is what it is. I think as artists we need to try to step outside what is comfortable and push the ‘rules’ or even break all of them while staying inside a particular tradition.

We also learned, from eavesdropping on tourists, that people in Spain are more dedicated about recycling than people in Texas. It’s only hearsay though, so don’t quote me on it.

Rigoberto’s – buy now
I painted this last year and I am fond of this painting. Rigoberto’s taco shop in North Park, San Diego. I don’t normally paint cars for various reasons aesthetic and philosophical, but in this case it seemed weird to paint a Drive Thru without including a car.
