Coronado Beach Painting San Diego

Coronado Beach

This is an older painting, from a little further up the beach than where I worked on this piece last weekend:

Coronado Plein Air

The surf was much more dramatic on Saturday, but the colors of the day were almost the same. This is winter light in San Diego. 😉 (I did need a long sleeve shirt to ward off the chill.)

Kayaks drawn up on the beach in La Jolla. This is such a tranquil spot.

And unlike Black’s Beach, no need to climb down what must be thousands of feet of cliffs. 😉

Sailboats on San Diego Bay – for sale

Sailboats on San Diego Bay. I enjoy the challenge of painting water, which is so many different colors at once, and the challenge of painting boats, which have complex curving shapes. This painting started out as drawings in a lawn chair on Shelter Island.

Blacks Beach Painting San Diego

Blacks Beach Bluffs

Blacks Beach Painting San Diego

Rolling surf seascape at Black’s Beach along the La Jolla, California coast. I love this beautiful area of the coast with its dramatic cliffs, wide beaches and hazy light; my knees love the stairs down to Blacks Beach somewhat less.

Waves on the Rocks, Cabrillo

San Diego Seascape Painting

Waves crashing on the rocks on Cabrillo point. I’d planned to touch up this plein air painting in the studio, but after living with the painting for a while, decided to leave it as-is. Something about the less polished state appeals to me.

San Diego Beach Cliffs

With this painting, I was aiming for what Monet did with the cliffs at Etretat:

He did many paintings there, and I’m going to try again with this one at a lower elevation, which I hope will give the cliffs the sense of presence they have in real life.
