Cabrillo Bridge San Diego

San Diego Balboa Park Museum of Man Painting

Archways- for sale

Another one from last year. A plein air painting from the Cabrillo bridge, looking at the Museum of Man.

I normally work on smoother surfaces, but this very coarse canvas was in the back of the car so I gave it a shot. Painting architecture on such a small scale on a highly textured surface isn’t easy, maybe not advisable unless you want it to get very abstract.

Fretting About Melanoma

Balboa Park Painting San Diego Landscape Plein Air

for sale
Painted on location in Florida canyon in Balboa Park, San Diego. I have this special shirt which has titanium woven in or something, and it is SPF 50. I wear it most of the time while painting. This particular day, I left it in the car by accident, so every moment of this painting I was fretting about melanoma.

Fortuna Wetlands San Diego Painting

Painted on location at the Fortuna wetlands reserve in San Diego. for sale

What a quiet, pretty spot with the occasional passer-by: bird watchers and people pushing small frou frou dogs in baby carriages (a California specialty). I’ll be going back.

Oh, BTW- this weekend is the Mission Federal Art Walk in San Diego. I’ll be in booth 353 near the corner of Columbia and Cedar with new paintings. The event is in the Little Italy neighborhood of downtown San Diego. You can take the train in to the Santa Fe Depot, ride the trolley to the Little Italy station, or it’s convenient to the 5 Freeway. If you’re downtown this weekend, it would be wonderful to see you. The event is from 11-6 Saturday and Sunday, and I’ll be live painting both days.
