With this painting, I was playing with light and form. Painted on location at Cabrillo. for sale

Painted on location “en plein air” on the Cabrillo national seashore, a beautiful area full of informational plaques. for sale

Painted down in the surf at Cabrillo. for sale
Here in San Diego, we are spoiled by “perfect” weather but in reality, there are many deviations from “perfect.” For example, it might be 75 degrees instead of 72 and we will feel a little hot.
But today was not like that. It was absolutely perfect.

Painted sitting on a bench outside the Hotel Del, in the morning before people arrived to enjoy the umbrellas and lounge chairs. for sale

This is my friend’s beautiful house. She asked me to paint a picture of it, and the first time I went I got interested in the alley behind. This is my second effort. for sale
And here is the first effort:
Neither one of these is quite right for what she has in mind, which is basically a house portrait. But I quite often find that commissions spark other ideas- some ideas that go off the rails completely and some ideas that turn out great.

One of my favorite painting spots in Balboa Park. for sale

Florida Canyon in Balboa Park, begun on location, then abandoned and dithered over. for sale
Painted this morning over breakfast in Little Italy, at a cafe with great food and insanely slow service, I’m talking 20 minutes to get a plain cup of coffee. And the baristas use fake Italian accents. for sale

Commission, headed out the door. Turns out 5 commissions at the same time is a little overcommitted, and everything is weeks or months late. I think this one is ready to go out the door though.
This turned out to be a very fun place to paint. The people on the trains waved as they rolled past, and there were an incredible number of pedestrians.

I’m really drawn to tented buildings. for sale

From last year. During Jury Duty, I had a long lunch break and wandered down until I found a coffee shop. The coffee shop had a kind of glass cage where you could sit on the patio and paint things. for sale

Evening light in the Alcazar Garden in Balboa Park… I love this peaceful, formal garden, based on one in Sevilla (I seem to remember). for sale

*update. As I look at this, that’s a trolley and not the bus. Oh well.
