The Palms- Hillcrest 60s Building

The Palm, San Diego Painting

The Palm, San Diego Painting- For Sale

I think this apartment building in Hillcrest/U Heights is probably from the 60s, since Modern design from that decade was more delicate. Whenever it’s from, it’s a cool place.

Decayed Modernism is so prevalent in southern California. Modernist architecture, urban planning, and design had mostly utopian ideals, trying to make people’s lives better through design. Did it work? I’m not sure, and there’s something poignant about the irony of those high ideals contrasted with buildings in disrepair.

Virginia Rain Painting 1

Virginia Rain Painting Landscape

Virginia Rain Painting – For Sale

A rainy day in Virginia, with the trees beginning to burst with autumn color. We just got back from a visit to see friends and family in the area. It didn’t rain every day, but it rained most days. I enjoyed painting outside in the wet and cold.

This is a hill outside Blacksburg, Virginia, in the New River Valley. I lived here for about five years, first working at Virginia Tech and then completing a MFA degree in painting.

It’s a wonderfully scenic place, with farms and forests and old white farmhouses with red tin roofs. This is in the Blue Ridge, which really is blue as the mountains step off into the distance.

You can just walk out the front door and be in a great painting.

Point Loma Sea Cliffs Plein Air

Cabrillo Point San Diego Painting

Cabrillo Point San Diego Painting- For Sale

A nice day at Cabrillo Point, looking out over the Pacific.

San Diego Plein Air

This painting required some touching up in the studio afterwards. The horizon line was bugging me, so I fixed that. My wet painting carrier also gouged off a strip of paint on the left side, which I knew was going to happen but I didn’t get around to fixing it until it had already dried, so I just tried to match the color.

U-Heights Nocturne

U Heights Nocturne

This is from a series of night and twilight paintings I did in Hillcrest and University Heights earlier in the year. This vacant lot once was home to a BevMo, which burned down. There’s a construction sign with an elevation drawing of a new building, so I guess something new is coming soon in this spot.

Sold, but here’s a link to other San Diego paintings in my Etsy shop.

Nevada Desert Painting

Nevada Desert Painting- For Sale

I tagged along to a software conference (Splunk) to paint in the Nevada desert outside Las Vegas.

I got turned around when headed to Red Rocks.

Here’s the desert from where I wound up when I got lost. No red rocks here, but the blue mountains were very pretty. I was on the exact opposite side of the city from where I wanted to be- but still on the same street!

Fog in the City, San Diego

San Diego Fog Palm Painting

Fog in the City- For Sale

A scene of fog out the front window.

I started this 4×4 painting last winter, but it got messed up and didn’t dry fast enough, so I did another version in purple.

The 4×4 went into a stack of unfinished work. I found it the the other day and it seemed like a fun project to finish it.
