6 years ago in Virginia, this was the view off my back deck. I painted this at the tail end of grad school. Just found it randomly yesterday. NFS.

Virginia Farm Landscape
Evening at my friend Julia’s place in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Virginia Summer Farm
A green summer meadow on a farm in Blacksburg, Virginia. The cows are just over the hill.
Virginia Winter Farm
Virginia is in the South, and even the mountains don’t get much snow. Especially in Blacksburg, home to Virginia Tech, winters are cold though, windy and often wet. This is a painting of a day like that.
Of course, actually at this moment a major winter storm is bearing down on Virginia- but I won’t be there to experience the snow.
Virginia Farm in Autumn
I used to bike along this path all the time, past cows and barns and through the woods, in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Virginia Autumn Woods
Here’s another painting of the bike path I used to ride to and from work, which wound through farms and forests and along an old railroad cutting through rock. It’s a nice ride if you’re in the Blacksburg area.
I started this painting either during or shortly after getting back from our trip to Blacksburg last autumn.
Virginia Farm Mud Puddle
I used to bike to work through the Virginia Tech farms in Blacksburg. It’s a hilly, green town- and this spot along my bike commute always grew a giant mud puddle after rain. Made quite the mess to bike through it, which I enjoyed!
Virginia Farm Landscape
This painting is one I started in Virginia on our visit to Blacksburg last autumn. It’s been hanging around the studio unfinished until now.
We had all kinds of weather on that trip- just about everything except for snow. This day was sunny and nice- more like summer than fall.
And tomorrow! Please join us at the Lyceum Gallery in downtown San Diego for the opening of my show, “Places Here.” It’s an exploration of San Diego’s urban neighborhoods, old houses, and hidden alleyways.
Reception: 6-8 PM.
Green Virginia Woods
Along the bike path between Blacksburg and Christiansburg, in the New River Valley, Virginia.
Once upon a time, I lived at one end of this bike path. I worked along a fork of the path, at Virginia Tech, and frequently biked to work in all weather. It was only a couple of miles, through farms and fields of cows and mud puddles and through the woods.
Sometimes- and almost every day in the summer- I’d take the other fork, which led here. And I’d continue past this spot, making it about a 12 mile bike ride all told.
Though I rode here in all seasons and all weather, in my memory this place is a golden summer afternoon, listening to the first Sugarland album on my iPod, riding a bike.
Blacksburg,Virginia Farm Landscape
This one went out as a Christmas present, so I think it’s safe to post it now!

I like this painting and I’m glad it found a home. This place is so familiar to me that I feel I could have painted this from memory (though I didn’t). It’s a winding gravel and mud road in Blacksburg, Virginia, and it smells of farm and cold, wet wind and it feels like frozen ears under a bike helmet in the winter. By now, the leaves will have changed and fallen, and the palette turned more to blue, but it’s just as pretty and tranquil a spot, and I like remembering it now from across the country in this perfect, sunny climate.
And now, time to put the finishing touches on Christmas dinner before everyone gets here. This year, we’re having Korean spareribs and a local wine from Temecula. Happy Holidays!
