A cottage in North Park, overhung by magnolia trees, in morning light.
And if you looked the other way that morning, you saw this:

Morning in a cloudy alley in Hillcrest. Old houses and recycling bins- two of my favorite things to paint!
Cottage Liquor in Hillcrest. This is where I go to buy 90% of my Lotto tickets.
This is as far as I got with the painting plein air before the sun got too fierce, around 9:30 AM. I’d already had to move the easel once (the date palm went behind the building when I did) to get under a tree… one of my first painting teachers told us, paint in the shade, and she’s absolutely right.
From the southeast corner of University Ave, in Hillcrest, looking up at the retaining walls of the Georgia St bridge over the avenue. This painting was a long time coming. I started it last winter and pulled it out periodically since then, working, wiping off the paint, giving up for a while.
Most recently I made one of my feeble efforts to clean the studio and found the painting again and I thought SURELY THIS TIME I can finish.
Trash cans lined up in a sunny alley. I like painting in alleys- it’s very peaceful.
I like cityscapes where the buildings are layered, in this case, by time as well as height. Georgia St in San Diego.
From the Georgia St Bridge, looking out over North Park.
This is the second version of this view of North Park I’ve painted. Well, technically it is the first version, but the first layers of color didn’t dry fast enough (I’d been experimenting with a different oil painting medium), so I impatiently started over with a second version.
After finishing that one, I lost my steam for the first version and put it away for I’m not sure how long, at least a couple of months. But recently I found it in a stack of half-finished work, and decided to give it another effort.

This Victorian is across the street from where my drawing group meets. Before it was restored, it was a wreck, but it is beautiful now.
Like so many things, it just needed a little work.

A pink house in Hillcrest, seen from the alley behind, on a bright, sunny San Diego morning.
I like out- of- the- way places like this quiet alley, with a low jumble of rooftops and back yards… I like to paint places that look like they aren’t trying too hard to impress.

The Mission Valley Target Store has an eerie presence, long and low at the end of its empty, early-morning parking lot.
Like yesterday’s painting of the termite tent, I’d had a somewhat perverse itch to paint the Target store for a long time. I’m not going to try to analyze it.

Morning glory vines draped on a fence in a sun-splashed Hillcrest alley. I do a lot of paintings of San Diego, and I especially enjoy out-of-the-way places like this one, with a strange cantilevered house festooned with flowers.
Our San Diego neighborhood- Hillcrest- is an eclectic mix of early 20th century house styles. I love this one, an Art Deco/ Mission Revival combination.
Mounds of bougainvillea like this are one of my favorite painting subjects. I also enjoy painting recycling bins!
San Diego Landscape Painting is for sale.
I’ve wanted to do a painting of the Embassy Hotel in Hillcrest for a long time, but I had a hard time deciding which facade would make the best painting.
I finally decided on this one, because I liked the simple, functional look of the brick, contrasted with the elaborate Italian/Spanish/Moorish fantasy palace style architecture of the street facades.
I like those facades too… maybe another day I’ll paint them!
