Termite Tent Painting

This older painting is still one of my favorites. What I love about it is the way the building glows inside the termite tent- they left on the floodlights and in some of the apartments. (I thought you were supposed to cut off the power before tenting, but I’m no expert). And it always takes me back to that cool, wet-smelling night with a marine layer overhead.

San Diego Nocturne, Sherman Heights
DIY renovation in Sherman Heights- for sale
I think of this place as the Carrie House since it reminds me so much of the house in the original Carrie with Sissy Spacek. The architecture is similar, but far from identical.
It’s a happy story of this area of urban renewal- undergoing a slow renovation by a do-it-yourselfer with black chickens in the yard (chickens not pictured). This house is just a couple of blocks from mine- (already renovated, built circa 1905) and recently got a historical designation. I think the plaque outside says it’s from the 1890s.
Night Painting on Commercial Street
I may as well call this painting Insomnia. I woke up at 3:30 from some nightmare (can’t remember what) and painted until just after dawn. This is the Mayflower trucking company, 2 blocks from my house. Buy now
