We went to the Santa Ynez wine country for the weekend. My hope was to paint some scenic landscapes but I guess my heart wasn’t really in it and I wound up painting this. This was the town of Santa Maria, mostly just a string of strip malls with housing behind it, like so many small towns all over the United States.

February 4- April 28 2017 at Girard Gourmet
7837 Girard Ave, La Jolla, CA.
in conjunction with the Athenaeum School of the Arts.
This spot is a few blocks from my place in Sherman Heights, a rapidly changing neighborhood overlooking the rapidly changing San Diego skyline.
The bridge over I-5.
In a tree filled square off the beaten path. I’d like to live here.
I thought these frosting colors were especially luscious.
And then it started to rain.
The morning also featured high end donuts.
Since I grew up in a military family we moved around a lot. 3 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, 2 high schools around the US and in Japan. Monterey, CA was the 2nd place and that’s why I wanted to paint the landscape here.
This is how you do it there, or the rats and the cats strew it all over the street.
