Hillcrest Watercolor: For Sale.

I love this mid century building. I’d guess it’s from the late 1950s, but it could be the 60s. It used to be a Chicken and Waffles restaurant, which was a lot of fun. Painted from across the street at breakfast.

It’s been a while since I’ve worked in pen and ink, highlighted with watercolor, and getting back into this medium feels wonderful and free.

Night Fog in Hillcrest, San Diego Art

Night Fog on New Year’s Eve

Night Fog in Hillcrest, San Diego Art

Night Fog in Hillcrest – Buy Now

This painting is from last New Year’s Eve. It was bitterly cold, for San Diego, which means it was in the upper 30s.

That night, dense fog rolled over the city and as we walked home through Hillcrest, the fog was so thick we could see only vague outlines of the buildings across Park Blvd.

This painting was my attempt to recreate the mood of that night.

I love urban views. Here we are looking to the west over Hillcrest, towards Mission Hills.

Painting in Hillcrest

This being San Diego in December, I did get chilly painting this in my shorts and running shoes, while listening to Christmas carols floating up from the plaza below.

House in Mission Hills – For Sale

I love the old houses in Mission Hills, and I was especially captivated by the shapes and colors of this one, with its rooms over the garage and Airstream trailer parked out front.

Sunrise on Cypress Avenue in San Diego – For Sale

A rare clear morning. So close to the ocean we usually have fog, or at least that’s my impression since let’s face it, I’m not usually up this early.

This is a painting of my street.

Not up quite this early today to meet other painters in the California Art Club on the beach at Coronado, right by the Hotel Del.

I wanted to do a painting of the hotel also, but was running late for a parade in North Park!

I enjoyed the samba dancers:

Painting of Downtown San Diego- For Sale

Painted from life in Golden Hill, overlooking the crisscrossing freeways and towers of downtown.

I like to get out of the studio and paint the city of San Diego and the places I travel to.

U-Heights Nocturne

U Heights Nocturne

This is from a series of night and twilight paintings I did in Hillcrest and University Heights earlier in the year. This vacant lot once was home to a BevMo, which burned down. There’s a construction sign with an elevation drawing of a new building, so I guess something new is coming soon in this spot.

Sold, but here’s a link to other San Diego paintings in my Etsy shop.

Fog in the City, San Diego

San Diego Fog Palm Painting

Fog in the City- For Sale

A scene of fog out the front window.

I started this 4×4 painting last winter, but it got messed up and didn’t dry fast enough, so I did another version in purple.

The 4×4 went into a stack of unfinished work. I found it the the other day and it seemed like a fun project to finish it.

Hillcrest Painting San Diego Plein Air – For sale

Morning light on the corner of Robinson and Park Blvd in San Diego. A short walk from my house in Hillcrest.

I like this corner because of the way the buildings pile up on the hill behind the art deco building in front. I like painting steep areas.

Hillcrest plein air

San Francisco’s vertigo- inducing streets are more famous- but San Diego’s got its fair share of knee-killing ascents. Painting the city on the hills is a new project of mine.
