Santa Ynez Valley Landscape Painting
Santa Ynez Valley Landscape Painting is for sale.
Sunny skies, golden summer grass, and deep green shade in the Santa Ynez Valley, near Santa Barbara, CA.
We spent a long weekend in Santa Barbara earlier in the summer, and I just discovered this and a couple of other paintings that I forgot to post. It’s a beautiful place.
We joined a wine club the day I started this painting up in the hills over Santa Barbara… and that wine shipment should arrive any minute now!
Trash Cans in the Alley
Trash cans lined up in a sunny alley. I like painting in alleys- it’s very peaceful.
University Avenue in North Park
From the Georgia St Bridge, looking out over North Park.
This is the second version of this view of North Park I’ve painted. Well, technically it is the first version, but the first layers of color didn’t dry fast enough (I’d been experimenting with a different oil painting medium), so I impatiently started over with a second version.
After finishing that one, I lost my steam for the first version and put it away for I’m not sure how long, at least a couple of months. But recently I found it in a stack of half-finished work, and decided to give it another effort.
For sale at my Etsy shop.
Evening Light in San Diego
In this painting, I was trying to capture the way the light streams across a landscape in the evening, creating long shadows against a bright sky.

U Heights Hill- Painting of San Diego
I’ve been making some changes to my process lately. One thing I’ve been trying, and I’m not sure if I think it’s successful, is drawing lines freehand instead of using a ruler. On the one hand, I like the sketchy quality that emerges. On the other, I like things to be crisp.
San Diego Seascape Painting
A steep path above the gently rolling surf in the ecological preserve on Point Loma in San Diego. This beautiful place is full of native San Diego species of plants and animals.
We’ve had a heat wave in San Diego this week and I’m itching to head back to the beach today. If traffic permits, of course…
Eucalyptus Trees in Balboa Park
Houses in Hillcrest- San Diego Paintings
Mission revival houses up on a hill- they have great views over North Park.
Pink House and Palm Trees- San Diego Painting
A pink house in Hillcrest, seen from the alley behind, on a bright, sunny San Diego morning.
I like out- of- the- way places like this quiet alley, with a low jumble of rooftops and back yards… I like to paint places that look like they aren’t trying too hard to impress.
More of my paintings of San Diego, California at my Etsy shop.
Painting of San Diego Eucalyptus Trees
A stand of Eucalpytus trees in Florida Canyon. I like places like this, where even though you’re in the middle of the city, you get soothing natural vistas.

Morning in the Alley, Hillcrest- San Diego Painting
Morning glory vines draped on a fence in a sun-splashed Hillcrest alley. I do a lot of paintings of San Diego, and I especially enjoy out-of-the-way places like this one, with a strange cantilevered house festooned with flowers.
Art Deco House in Hillcrest- San Diego Painting
Our San Diego neighborhood- Hillcrest- is an eclectic mix of early 20th century house styles. I love this one, an Art Deco/ Mission Revival combination.
Craftsman House in Hillcrest- San Diego Urban Painting
I love the soaring lines on the gable. It’s a great old house.

Bougainvillea and Recycling Bins
Mounds of bougainvillea like this are one of my favorite painting subjects. I also enjoy painting recycling bins!
