I used to bike along this path all the time, past cows and barns and through the woods, in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Santa Barbara Landscape
In the Santa Ynez Valley, in the mountains above Santa Barbara. Beautiful place, with rolling farmland and otherworldly mountains rising above.
Virginia Farm Mud Puddle
I used to bike to work through the Virginia Tech farms in Blacksburg. It’s a hilly, green town- and this spot along my bike commute always grew a giant mud puddle after rain. Made quite the mess to bike through it, which I enjoyed!
Virginia Farm Landscape
This painting is one I started in Virginia on our visit to Blacksburg last autumn. It’s been hanging around the studio unfinished until now.
We had all kinds of weather on that trip- just about everything except for snow. This day was sunny and nice- more like summer than fall.
And tomorrow! Please join us at the Lyceum Gallery in downtown San Diego for the opening of my show, “Places Here.” It’s an exploration of San Diego’s urban neighborhoods, old houses, and hidden alleyways.
Reception: 6-8 PM.
Blacksburg,Virginia Farm Landscape
This one went out as a Christmas present, so I think it’s safe to post it now!

I like this painting and I’m glad it found a home. This place is so familiar to me that I feel I could have painted this from memory (though I didn’t). It’s a winding gravel and mud road in Blacksburg, Virginia, and it smells of farm and cold, wet wind and it feels like frozen ears under a bike helmet in the winter. By now, the leaves will have changed and fallen, and the palette turned more to blue, but it’s just as pretty and tranquil a spot, and I like remembering it now from across the country in this perfect, sunny climate.
And now, time to put the finishing touches on Christmas dinner before everyone gets here. This year, we’re having Korean spareribs and a local wine from Temecula. Happy Holidays!
Virginia Farm
I biked through this farm to my job at Virginia Tech many times over the four years I worked on the campus. On this cloudy day, the cows weren’t out.
Virginia Farm Painting
A farm in the New River Valley, with autumn just beginning to color the trees.
Virginia Rain Painting 2
A rainy day in Virginia, with the trees beginning to burst with autumn color and the silos veiled in mist over the hill.
Santa Ynez Valley Landscape Painting
The rolling hills above Santa Barbara, dotted with California oaks and livestock.
Farm and Clouds
Looking down from high hills over farms and fields below, in the Santa Ynez Valley near Santa Barbara.
This painting is the opposite of how I usually work. Usually I start small and then work large. But this time, I started with a big painting, which turned into a surly adolescent.
So I started over with a small sketch to try to figure out the composition.

Afternoon Light, Santa Barbara
Golden late afternoon light in Santa Barbara, California, with the mountains rising in the distance.

Rolling Farmland in Santa Barbara
The rolling hills above Santa Barbara, dotted with California oaks and livestock. We saw horses, cattle- including longhorns- ostrich or emu (can’t tell which)… and then eventually we saw the inside of a winery tasting room.
We went to Fess Parker Winery. Fess Parker was the actor who played Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone on TV back in the day.
At the winery, you could buy miniature coon skin hats to put on wine bottles. Very tempting, but we chose to spend our money on wine instead.
Santa Ynez Valley Landscape 2
We spent a long weekend in Santa Barbara, CA, and drove up into the gorgeous Santa Ynez valley one day. This painting started as a sketch that day.
The Santa Ynez valley immediately made me think of Corot’s groundbreaking Italian plein air landscapes.
