Craftsman House on Florida Ave

I love this old, beautifully restored Craftsman. It’s on Florida Ave, a couple of streets away from my house.

San Diego Skyline from Spanish Landing Park- For Sale

A small plein air watercolor of the San Diego skyline seen behind the Harbor Island Marina.

I’ve mostly posted oil paintings here, and I continue to paint in oil every day. But I’m eager for the freedom of pen and ink, highlighted with watercolor, so I’m increasingly turning to watercolor for quick studies. Normally I use pastel for those, but I feel like a change. So watercolor it is! I thought you might like to see some of them.

I painted this yesterday- a perfect sunny day- over lunch at Spanish Landing Park.

What was the lunch? Pesto pasta.

This is the study for a larger painting, and every time I look at it I hear a Shakira song in my head that must have been playing while I worked on both pieces. The song goes “Solo tu something something.” It’s off the album “Donde Estan Los Ladrones” which is one of my go-to painting soundtracks.

Night Fog in Hillcrest – Buy Now

This painting is from last New Year’s Eve. It was bitterly cold, for San Diego, which means it was in the upper 30s.

That night, dense fog rolled over the city and as we walked home through Hillcrest, the fog was so thick we could see only vague outlines of the buildings across Park Blvd.

This painting was my attempt to recreate the mood of that night.

Blacks Beach Painting, San Diego

This is kind of a companion to yesterday’s Blacks Beach painting, both scenes looking out to sea, and painted at the same time.

When I go to Blacks Beach, I try to do several paintings, since it’s at the bottom of these wonderful soaring cliffs and the stairs down to it are so killer. It’s a great place to paint, with every kind of light effect imaginable from the ethereal to the very stark.

I love macarons, and I have finally learned how to make them at home. So far, I have had some odd results in terms of shape but they were still very tasty. I’ve tackled raspberry and pineapple-chocolate.

The ones in this painting were store bought at a great Korean bakery here in San Diego called Big Joy. I think the flavors were pistachio, strawberry, and cappuccino.

Painting in Hillcrest

This being San Diego in December, I did get chilly painting this in my shorts and running shoes, while listening to Christmas carols floating up from the plaza below.
