Liquor store on the corner- buy now
Just painted this one at breakfast. One slight snafu when a very pregnant woman illegally parked in the red zone, blocking my view with her Prius. But she got her coffee and left quickly!
Archways- for sale
A plein air painting of the Museum of Man, from the Laurel Street (a.k.a. Cabrillo) Bridge. This was one of those where the light was going and it was getting cold- almost 60 degrees in February, which is practically impossible to deal with and I had to zip up my sweatshirt- but I tried to get one more painting out of the afternoon and I’m glad I did. Who does not love these buildings? I left off some of the Baroque twiddles because there just wasn’t time, but I love the archways.
Oh, and there were street singers while I was painting this as well as another piece which I haven’t photographed yet, but hope to post soon. It was original, nice, tenor singing, a guy and a girl playing together. All in all, a great afternoon.
Ah yes, and one more thing. If you’re in San Diego Sunday night, I have a painting in this juried exhibition- En Plein Air International Exhibition. The reception is from 6-9 PM at L Street Fine Art in Downtown San Diego. It’s a convenient spot right off the Trolley line and with ample parking. Hope to see you there!
Eucalyptus at Twilight- buy now
This was kind of a magical sunset, because first the trees went blue in the gathering night, with everything backlit by the setting sun at the top of the hill.
Lake Murray, San Diego- Buy Now
This plein air landscape is from last Sunday’s California Art Club get-together at Lake Murray in San Diego. I got an early start and was working by 7:30, though the paint out started at 9. As usual, I got lost and the rest of the group materialized on the spit of land I was painting, instead of the one I was standing on.
Houses in Mission Hills- Buy Now
A steep street curves up out of a canyon in the San Diego neighborhood of Mission Hills. I wound up here by accident because I took the wrong street; I’m glad I did.
Along the bike path in Blacksburg – for sale
I used to bike along this path all the time, past cows and barns and through the woods, in Blacksburg, Virginia.

San Elijo Lagoon Painting – For Sale
An open air painting of the tidal marshes at the San Elijo Lagoon. It’s a really great place.
San Diego Skyline from Mission Hills – For Sale
I was very excited to paint the skyline from this spot. We’d driven past on Saturday when the clouds were super dramatic.
I was a little disappointed in the clouds on Sunday for not wreathing around the high rises… but I got over it.
Red Rocks Canyon Landscape Painting – Buy Now
One last painting from Red Rocks- I’m pretty sure there are no other half-completes in the stack.
Red Rocks Painting – For Sale
I tagged along to an IT conference in Las Vegas last summer, and had a confused time getting out to Red Rocks Canyon due to my tendency to drive in giant circles while taking wrong turn after wrong turn.
So I’d hoped to do more paintings of the desert on location than I managed to. This is a studio piece that’s been trying to get finished for the past five or six months. Fox Canyon? Wildsomething Canyon? I can’t remember what this pocket canyon was called, but I would have loved to explore it more than I did before the sun went down.
